Pet cancer assistance
The Louis Steinwedel Memorial Pet Cancer Fund helps low-income Colorado pet parents age 50 and older access cancer-related veterinary care for their companion animals. The fund was established in memory of Louis Steinwedel, a lifelong animal lover whose family helped create the program in recognition of his determination to care for his own beloved dogs.
Through this fund, we help eligible pet parents pursue cancer treatment when cost might otherwise stand in the way. Assistance is paid directly to the veterinary provider and may be used toward approved cancer-related care.
Who may qualify
Applicants must:
Be current Colorado residents
Be age 50 or older
Demonstrate financial need
Provide veterinary records, a diagnosis, and a written treatment estimate
Have a veterinarian or veterinary specialist prepared to provide the recommended care
Apply before treatment expenses have been incurred
Applicants may also be asked to show how they plan to cover any remaining balance and whether they have requested assistance from other veterinary charities.
Funding is limited and depends on available resources, the number of pending requests, and the circumstances of each case. Qualification does not guarantee an award.
How assistance works
Our grants may provide up to $750 per animal, although the amount awarded varies by case and available funding. Approved funds are paid directly to the veterinary clinic rather than to the pet parent.
Once assistance is approved, treatment must generally begin within 21 days. We may also consider the pet’s recent veterinary history, including whether routine care has been provided during the previous 24 months.
We encourage applicants to seek support from multiple sources, as our assistance may cover only part of the total cost of diagnosis or treatment.
